Once Upon A Time

Doesn't Always end

Happily Ever After!

A Fairy Tale is sub-type of folktale where it tends to be the longest, most descriptive, and most complicated compared with other types of tales, like legends, myths, and fables.

Fairy tales of great imagination and invention, often quite cruel and gruesome, were being created by the women in medieval times surreptitiously rebelling against the constraints placed on them by their restrictive society. They were not written for children.

The oral tradition of the fairy tale came long before the written page. Tales were told or enacted dramatically, rather than written down, and handed down from generation to generation, Grandmother to Mother to daughter. Because of this, the history of their development is necessarily obscure. The oldest known written fairy tales stem from ancient Egypt, c. 1300 BC.

Once Upon a Time, fairy tales weren't written for children. In spite of their name, the popular fairy tales usually have very little to do with fairies. The French literary fairy tales of the 17th century do feature far more fairies than the tales which are best-known today. The Grimm brothers collected the folk tales of the German people to make up their volume, but fairy tales are more than just folk tales. It's a story or a tale, and has come to mean a story of wonder and enchantment, as a fairy tale always is!

Like any other professional in Medieval Times a good Storyteller/SKALD weaves bits of truth into their tales as they entertain everyone who gathers around the fire in the great hall. It is up to the listener to pick the truths out and which are wondrously imaginitive nothings that make a spectacular tale. If a Skald is entertaining enough, then free meals & lodging are in abundance, if they are not, then they go hungry until they get better!
